Common Geriatric Conditions

Geriatrics is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illnesses and problems specific to the aging patient.  Many older patients have complicated medical conditions that require a comprehensive medical approach.  Theses complicated conditions often make recovery from injury or illness much more difficult and lengthy.

Common geriatric conditions include difficulty with balance, falls, loss of appetite, weight loss, confusion and memory loss.  Knowing how to identify, treat and prevent these problems is essential to providing quality medical care to the geriatric patient.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  To prevent a fall can make all the difference in the world to an older individual.  Now more than ever, older individuals should exercise daily, make routine visits to the doctor and keep in touch with family members and loved ones who can watch out for any changes in their health or well-being.
